Bloomberg Cuomo Bickering Delays Completion of 9/11 Museum

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo are bickering with each other, over who is going to be the boss of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, The New York Times has reported.

"Aides to Mr. Bloomberg and Mr. Cuomo have so far been unable to resolve their differences over which government agencies will pay the operating costs of the museum, which is intended to document the terrorist attacks of 2001 and honor the nearly 3,000 victims. The two sides also remain at odds over who will have oversight of the museum and the surrounding memorial."

The infighting means that the 9/11 museum will not be open in time for this year's anniversary of the September 11 attacks, or even in time for next year's anniversary.

The on-going disputes between Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Cuomo may delay the completion of the 9/11 museum, so much so that The New York Times estimates that construction on 1 World Trade Center, formerly known as the Freedom Tower, may be finished in early 2014 -- before the 9/11 museum can be completed.

Weeks after Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed major FDNY budget cuts, which included the mayor's annual threat to close firehouses, a dangerous fire on the 89th floor of 1 World Trade Center reminded everybody about the threats to public safety that the mayor's reckless budget cuts would cause.

New Yorkers turned out for two simultaneous demonstrations near the former site of the World Trade Center on Sunday, August 22, 2010, to either support or oppose the building of Park51, which has been described as the ''Ground Zero Mosque.'' On the side against the Mosque, speakers tried to link grief over the September 11 attacks with anger towards Muslims and opposition against the Mosque. At the same time, over at the demonstration in support of building the Mosque, at least one speaker raised the issue of Zionism as all the more reason to support the Mosque.

Meanwhile, there are opportunist politicians, like Rick Lazio, who are fanning the flames of hatred and 9/11 grief, in order to win sympathy from voters, who still grieve over the attacks of 9/11.

For his part, Mayor Michael Bloomberg seems to be using the Ground Zero Mosque issue to deflect attention away from the Charter Revision Commission farce and other scandals.

NEW YORK (AP/1010 WINS) -- New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the city will contest a court order to list a retired fire captain alongside his former colleagues on the Sept. 11 memorial.

Bloomberg said Tuesday the city "will fight this in court." He says the Fire Department of New York made a reasonable choice to list only active-duty firefighters in an FDNY section on the memorial.

Retired Capt. James Corrigan was working in a private fire safety job for the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. That's how officials planned to list him on the memorial when it opens next year.

His family says Corrigan acted as a firefighter that day while helping colleagues and deserves the same recognition on the memorial. A Queens judge agreed with the family on Monday.
